The Ministry of Health has officially responded to public concerns following the circulation of a disciplinary query involving Bernice Aboagye, a staff nurse whose alleged comments about Ghana’s Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, went viral on social media.
According to reports, the nurse was captured in a series of videos using inappropriate and unprofessional language directed at the Minister. In response, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) issued a formal query, citing a breach of the GHS Code of Conduct and describing her remarks as “unprintable, inappropriate, and scandalous.”
In a statement released on Sunday, October 12, the Ministry of Health acknowledged the disciplinary process initiated by the GHS and commended the Service for acting swiftly to uphold professional standards within the public health sector.
However, in a notable turn, Health Minister Hon. Akandoh has appealed for clemency in the matter. The Ministry’s statement revealed that the Minister has called on the GHS to “temper justice with mercy”, citing the need for compassion even in disciplinary procedures.
“Hon. Akandoh has appealed to the Service to temper justice with mercy in addressing the matter,” the statement read.
The Minister emphasized his and the government’s commitment to tolerance, openness, and freedom of expression, acknowledging that divergent views and criticism are welcome in a democratic society. Nonetheless, he cautioned that insulting or abusive language should not be part of that discourse.
“Health workers should feel free to voice their concerns and criticisms, but they must do so respectfully. Such decorum contributes to the progress of the health sector,” he advised.
The Ministry also took the opportunity to clarify its stance on demonstrations and protests, asserting that while it fully respects the constitutional right of citizens to protest, such actions must be carried out responsibly.
“The Ministry wishes to emphasise that it has no objection to demonstrations, as they are legitimate expressions of frustration and a constitutional right of every citizen. However, the Ministry will not condone the use of abusive language or acts of indiscipline during such demonstrations,” the statement noted.
Finally, the Ministry issued a reminder to all health professionals about the need to exercise caution in their public communications, particularly on social media platforms, stressing the importance of upholding the dignity and integrity of the health profession
