2025 NSMQ Launched: 174 Schools Set to Battle for National Glory
The much-anticipated 2025 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has officially been launched, ushering in yet another exciting chapter in the celebration of academic excellence across Ghana.
Held on Wednesday, October 15, at the Elijah Namyela Pankah Auditorium in Accra, the launch ceremony brought together key figures from the education sector, corporate sponsors, and enthusiastic students. This year, a record-breaking 174 senior high schools will compete for the coveted NSMQ trophy and the ultimate bragging rights as Ghana’s top science and maths school.
In her welcome address, Nana Akua Mensah Bonsu, Managing Director of Primetime Limited – organisers of the NSMQ – emphasized the continued importance of the quiz in promoting academic brilliance and innovation.
“The NSMQ continues to celebrate the talent, discipline, and resilience of young Ghanaians,” she said. “It remains a powerful symbol of academic excellence and innovation.”
Highlighting the organisers’ push for greater accessibility and fairness, she noted that the 2025 balloting exercise was conducted virtually on June 25.
“At the national championship this year, we have 174 schools participating – a remarkable leap from last year’s 157. This reflects the growing reach and relevance of the competition,” she added.
She also congratulated the 15 new entrants and 27 seeded schools, applauding their determination to compete at the highest level. In addition, she expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and corporate sponsors including GOIL PLC, MTN MoMo, JoyNews, Pepsodent, Prudential Life Insurance, Jupay, and Truster AI.
Delivering the keynote address, Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu described the NSMQ as a national treasure, playing a vital role in nurturing Ghana’s scientific talent and advancing STEM education.
“This platform is dedicated to you, to show brilliance,” he told the students.
“Shine, arise with science and math. The future of Ghana depends on a generation that is committed to STEM, because countries that prioritize science and mathematics perform better in economic growth.”
The Minister also hinted at future reforms to the competition, including the possible integration of research and experimentation – a move he believes will further enhance the learning experience. He praised the expansion of school participation under President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, calling it a bold step towards educational equity in science.
Speaking on behalf of one of the event’s longstanding partners, Irene Boakye Dankwah, Corporate Affairs Executive of GOIL PLC, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting educational excellence.
“At GOIL, our tagline is ‘Good Energy,’ and there is no better way to demonstrate this than investing in the next generation of scientific thinkers,” she said.
“Your passion for science and maths represents the true good energy of Ghana’s future.”
The 2025 NSMQ National Championship will return to Cape Coast, with preliminary contests kicking off on October 20. The grand finale is scheduled for November 6, 2025.
As anticipation builds, all eyes will be on these brilliant young minds as they battle it out for glory, pride, and a place in history.
